The 6-foot-1, 195 pound Montgomery said one of the main reasons he chose the Gamecocks was because of how he felt he fit into their system on defense.
“The main reason is because of the Spur linebacker position”, said Montgomery. “I feel that position is just perfect for my style of play.”
Montgomery said there were other reasons that he chose the Gamecocks as well. “The school is a great school” explained Montgomery. “I love the campus and the coaching staff is one of the best in the country.”
As with most recruits, one of the most important things that schools can do is to develop a great relationship with the prospect early on. Montgomery made it clear that his recruiter for the Gamecocks, Coach Jeep Hunter, set the foundation early on for what today is a great relationship between the two.
“Coach Jeep is a real cool guy. We talk all the time”, said Montgomery. “I’ll call him whenever I need someone to talk to. We’ve had a great relationship for quite some time now, and I have no doubts at all that it will continue especially since I’m a Gamecock now.”
When asked if Coach Hunter new of his intentions to become a Gamecock on his visit to Columbia, Montgomery said, “I know that Coach Hunter was aware of my intent to officially commit today.”
Montgomery held offers from Arkansas, Iowa State, Ole Miss, and UCF at the time of his commitment to the Gamecocks, but South Carolina had to fend off two fellow SEC schools in the end to secure Montgomery’s commitment.
“Ole Miss and Arkansas were the other schools I was the most interested in”, Montgomery said. “Those two schools were the biggest competition for South Carolina.”
Montgomery also made it clear that the conference in which he wanted to play his college ball was a big deal to him. When asked to specify which conference, he said, “The SEC definitely, I wanted to stay in the SEC. I want to play with the best and that’s what the SEC offers.”
Montgomery also took time to briefly describe what they did while on campus at South Carolina.
“We had a quick campus tour”, said Montgomery. “We visited all the facilities and all the training rooms, and had the opportunity to meet briefly with Coach Spurrier and few of the other coaches.”
Montgomery wanted to reassure Gamecock fans that his commitment to South Carolina was strong. “I’m not planning on taking any other visits to any other schools”, Montgomery said.
“My Commitment to South Carolina is rock solid.”
The Florida prospect said that he definitely plans on visit South Carolina again, and that this was just the first of many trips to Columbia that he would make.
“I’m planning on taking my official visit sometime in December, and I know I’ll be making it back for a few games this season.”
In the wake of his commitment, Montgomery stated that he feels he has a lot to offer the Gamecocks.
“I’m consistent on the field, I never take a plays off, and I’m also quick on my feet”, said Montgomery. “I can pack a punch when I need to and I have no problem being a leader and an example on and off the field.”
While confident in what he brings to the table as the Gamecocks latest commitment, Montgomery was quick to mention that he wanted to continue to work on one specific aspect of his game.
“I definitely want to work on my reads”, Montgomery said. “I want to make sure I know what to do in every situation, so I’m in the best position to attack and shut people down.”
When asked if there was anything he’d like to say to Gamecock fans if he could at this time, Montgomery made it short and sweet, “just be ready, because Jordan Montgomery can’t wait to be a Gamecock!”
