Rockdale County HS (Conyers, Ga.) Neville Hewitt says South Carolina is on top for him. Gamecock Anthem recently had the opportunity to speak with Hewitt and ask him why the Gamecocks are currently the school to beat for his services. Look inside for this FREE recruiting update from GamecockAnthem.com.
The Gamecocks have plucked their fair share of players from the state of Georgia over the years, and they are hitting the Peach State hard again this year in search of talented prospects who want to be Gamecocks.
One of those prospects that
South Carolina
identified early on was Rockdale County H.S. athlete
Neville Hewitt
. South Carolina was the first school to offer the 6-2, 190-pound Conyers, Ga. native and it has paid off for the Gamecocks to this point.
“Right now South Carolina is at the top”, said Hewitt. “South Carolina,
Buffalo
, and
Western Kentucky
have all officially offered me, but South Carolina is definitely on top for me.”
Asked if any other schools were showing interest in him at this time besides those who have already offered, Hewitt listed, “
Middle Tennessee
State, Delaware State,
Purdue
,
Michigan State
,
Florida State
, Georgia,
Tennessee
, and
Florida
”.
The Gamecocks had the opportunity early on with Hewitt to make an impression and according to him they did.
“I went to South Carolina’s spring game and had a great time”, Hewitt said. “When I went down there I really liked the atmosphere and the coaches really made me feel welcome and at home.”
One of those coaches that Hewitt has developed a good relationship with is his recruiter Coach Lorenzo Ward.
“Coach Ward is my recruiter and I really like him a lot. He’s cool.” Hewitt said. “He talks about football, he always asks how my family is doing, he also makes a lot jokes and stuff like always asking me if I can hit.”
South Carolina and Coach Ward have offered the Georgia native as a prospect on the defensive side of the ball.
“South Carolina likes me at safety,” he said.
Asked if he had any plans to visit the Gamecocks anytime soon Hewitt confirmed, “I plan on visiting South Carolina again really soon. I will be going to the Showcase they are having at the end of this month.”
Hewitt says he thought early on that he would have committed to a school by now or at least early in the process. However, things have changed in that regard.
“At first I wanted to make an early commitment," he says." But I think I want to wait a little bit longer now to see what other schools might offer.”
Asked what he is looking for in deciding what school he will ultimately commit to Hewitt said, “I want to play, even if it is coming in off the sideline every now and then for certain packages and such. I just want to play, and play for a team that has a chance to win a championship in the future.”
