Henry talks pledge
Posted Jun 17, 2010
The South Carolina Gamecocks picked up their fourth commitment of the 2011 cycle when First Coast HS (Jacksonville, Fla.) safety Jared Henry committed to wide receivers coach Steve Spurrier, Jr.
"It was just mainly Coach Spurrier, Jr. and the conversations with him," the 6-0, 180-pound
gave as the main reason he chose
. "It was great; he gave me a lot of insight and information about South Carolina. And that kind of made me want to go see. Then when we got up there yesterday, I loved it. I loved it."
"It feels good. I'm glad it's over with," he said. "Glad it's over, because it's a long process."
Henry, who chose South Carolina over offers from
and USF, visited South Carolina yesterday.
"It was great," Henry continued about his relationship with Spurrier, Jr. We cracked jokes and stuff," "And when we talk it's not all about (recruiting) and stuff. He met my dad too so they know each other."
While Henry plays at First Coast now, he originally starred at Andrew Jackson HS in Jacksonville.
The South Carolina fanbase and former Andrew Jackson star
's thoughts on them also helped steer the safety to Carolina.
"I asked Corey Addison about it," Henry said. "What he told me is that South Carolina is the main college as far as sports and that people come from all over South Carolina to see them play. The people showed him a lot of love."
Henry didn't know off the top of his head any prospects that have Carolina offers that he knows and aren't committed elsewhere, but does plan to recruit teammate DE Chris Terry II if the Gamecocks offer him. Terry visited with Henry this week as well.
Henry was not able to meet assistant head coach in charge of the defense Ellis Johnson or defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward on his visit, but plans another trip with his family to get to know the two defensive coaches.
He believes he will fit in just fine with a Gamecock defense that has been very good over the last few years.
"Ever since I've played football, as far as middle school and high school, our defense that I played on has always been awesome," he said. "So I think I should fit right in with their aggressive style of play."
Henry says he is firmly committed to South Carolina and doesn't plan to take any other visits.
Henry wanted to send a message to the Gamecock faithful.
"When I come there. I feel like I can bring aggressiveness and personality."
While Henry is a two-star prospect currently on Scout.com, state of Florida recruiting analyst Geoff Vogt described Henry as a three-star type talent.
Henry is South Carolina's fourth commitment of the 2011 class joining Marvin Ridge (Waxhaw, N.C.) WR
, Clarke Central (Athens, Ga.) ATH
and Ridgeland (Rossville, Ga.) DE
