Simmons pulls the trigger
Posted Jan 24, 2010
The South Carolina Gamecock coaching staff wanted to add a defensive end to the class of 2010 and late Sunday Morning they got their man. Greater Atlanta Christian School (Norcross, Ga.) DE Corey Simmons has committed to South Carolina.
"South Carolina is the place for me because of the education and the chance to play
said following his commitment.
Simmons, the son former NFL great Clyde Simmons, Jr. picked up an offer from Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks on Sunday, and was then on campus from Thursday to Saturday for an official visit.
After talking it over with his family, the 6-4, 225-pound prospect decided to pull the trigger.
"I'd have to give (the visit) a 10," Simmons told GamecockAnthem.com on Saturday, "because my man Chaun he just took me around and we had a good time. We just found some people to hang out with, and the people here at South Carolina are real cool. They don't seem like there are really any problems around here or anything."
Simmons, who also had an offer from N.C. Central, remained firmly under the radar partially due to the fact his high school team has struggled for the last few years.
"I think everybody believes we're 2A, we went 1-9, maybe they [they don't think we're very good]," Simmons said. "I mean we stayed in games, sometimes we just didn't really show up I guess. But maybe it really did affect it a little bit."
But when the offers didn't arrive, Simmons and his father began sending out tapes everywhere after his senior year. In the end, everything worked out, and Simmons says he found the best fit for him.
"When I first got there, we had got there a little bit early, so we just happen to sit in the dorm room and just hang with some of the players," Simmons said after the visit. "Just hanging out with them and seeing what it's about, like really finding out what's up about South Carolina football, and what's going on behind the scenes that you don't [normally] find out, just hanging out with them, I really enjoyed that, I liked that a lot."
Simmons becomes the Gamecocks' 20th commitment of the class of 2010, and is the third defensive linemen to join the fold.
