Sanders is 100% Gamecock
Posted Jul 25, 2009
The Gamecocks landed one of the top cornerback prospects in the state of Georgia on Saturday night when Troup (LaGrange, GA) standout Cadarious Sanders gave his verbal pledge to the USC coaches. While Sanders may not get as much publicity as some prospects in the Peach State, he says not to let that fool you - he's a fast, physical, aggressive corner who doesn't back down on the football field.
The 6-0, 185 pound
, who only had two passes completed on him all of last season, told
shortly following his commitment that several aspects of the USC program stood out to him and helped him decide to pull the trigger on a commitment.
"Man, I really like everything about South Carolina. They have a good defense. I love how they have physical corners. They like to play man-to-man, and I love that. I'm used to running that in high school," said Sanders. "I also really like the coaches. Coach (Lorenzo) Ward is a very down to earth person. He's told me that I can come to him and talk with him about anything. It doesn't have to involve football, just person to person I can talk to him about anything. Coach (Eric) Wolford, he's a pretty cool guy too. We joke around a lot.
"Of all the coaches I talked to, they made me feel like I was at home. They told me they're going to take care of me when I come to their school. They'll make sure I get my work done, and that stood out to me."
Sanders has built a good relationship with former Gamecock cornerback
, and he said that some of Thomas' comments helped him feel even more at ease with the decision to attend USC.
"Carlos told me they're going to help me regardless of what happens with football. They're going to help me have an education. If I'm good enough, it doesn't matter whether I'm a sophomore or a freshman, I'm going to play."
The athletic cornerback committed to USC at the second annual Gamecock Showcase Camp, and he appreciated the feedback that he received from future position coach Lorenzo Ward at the event.
"I did pretty good. I know there are things that I can work on, but the coaches told me I performed well. Coach Ward said the things that I messed up on, that's nothing. He said I can learn that in no time and he'll help me out with it. He likes how I finish every drill and go hard on every drill."
When asked to describe what type player he is at the cornerback position, Sanders replied that he is a complete, lockdown corner who takes pride in going hard every snap.
"I'm a good cover guy. I'm gonna go hard every play no matter what. I'm a big help in the run game. I love to hit. I can cover the deep passes and the short passes. I can do it all," he said. "I don't back down, and I just love the challenge."
While some have questioned Sanders speed as a bigger cornerback, he made a statement about his speed by recording one of the fastest times at USC's camp on Saturday.
"I ran a 4.4 at the camp," he said proudly.
Although other schools are still likely to pursue him, Sanders said he is shutting down his recruitment and is happy to be a Gamecock.
"I'm done. I'm 100-percent committed. South Carolina is where I'm going."
The talented cornerback closed by passing on a message for the Gamecock Nation about what to expect from him in the coming years.
"Be looking for me. Look for a hard worker and a man who's going to lay it down on the field. I'm going to give everything I've got."
