The South Carolina Gamecocks picked up their sixth offensive line commitment of the 2010 class…
Gamecocks land sixth OL commitment
Gibson, who did not surrender a single sack all last season for perennial Sunshine State powerhouse Lincoln HS, picked up an offer from South Carolina back in May, and he had openly favored the Gamecocks ever since. In a recent interview with GamecockAnthem.com, Gibson cited the opportunity to play for legendary Head Coach Steve Spurrier and the ability to play in the SEC as the main reasons why USC stood out to him.
"They are a great SEC program," Gibson said of South Carolina. "I've always liked Steve Spurrier, and I think he's a great coach. South Carolina is a real good school."
The 6-6, 265 pounder is an athletic, hard nosed lineman who possesses a lot of the tools college coaches look for in a line prospect, according to Lincoln High School Head Coach Yusuf Shakir.
"He's very athletic. He has very long arms. He's extremely physical and aggressive," said Shakir. "He's a great kid, too. All the kids on the team love him. He's a great combination of a great player and also a great person."
While Gibson will undoubtedly need to add weight to his frame to compete at the SEC level, Shakir does not foresee that being a problem for his star offensive tackle.
"He's easily going to be 300 pounds. His older brother played for us too, and his brother was that same size coming out of high school. He signed with FIU and played there, and he's like 315 now. Cody has that same type of frame," stated Shakir. "He's a prototype NFL lineman that you look for with size, height, long arms, and athleticism. He's going to be a big guy, but he's not going to look big. It's always easier to put weight on a kid than it is to take weight off of him."
Another aspect that stands out about Gibson on the field is his blue-collar, workmanlike attitude that he brings each and every day.
"He doesn't take any plays off. He comes out and plays hard, and that's how he practices. What you see on film, he's the same way everyday in practice."
Gibson, who was recruited by Coach Jay Graham for the Gamecocks, will be a very good player for USC in the coming years, in Shakir's opinion.
"I think he's going to do great at South Carolina. He has a great frame that everybody is looking for. He has quick feet, and he's just going to grow. Cody is just a natural, prototypical lineman that everybody is looking for," he said. "Coach Graham thinks he has a great physical demeanor about him in the trenches, and he also likes his long arms, his build, and his quick feet. He protects well as either a right or left tackle, and I see him doing very well at South Carolina."
Gibson becomes USC's thirteenth commitment in the 2010 recruiting class, and he chose the Gamecocks over offers from programs like Maryland, Illinois, USF, Indiana, East Carolina, and others.
The Sunshine State lineman boasts an impressive 3.0 GPA in the classroom, and he has not reported a test score yet.
