Robinson Pledges to South Carolina
After USC offered, the recruiting process unfolded quickly for Robinson. He recapped the steps of his recruitment.
"They came down one day at the end of the year when I was in school," Robinson said. "Coach Lawing came and saw me and talked to me, and told me to come to their camp. He took some game film with him, and after a week, after they had sat down and watched the film with Coach Wolford, Coach Wolford called me back and said I had my first offer. He's been real aggressive in trying to get me there and straight-up from the beginning."
A no-nonsense-type player, that "straight-up" approach clicked with Robinson from the beginning. Wolford's approach to coaching also clicked with the massive prospect. He says Wolford's style reminds him a lot of his coaches at Havelock.
"He's very aggressive and hands-on," Robinson said. "He likes to get into the drills with you. He's the kind of coach I like."
In the end, Wolford and Lawing both played big factors in Robinson's decision.
"The coaches, Coach (Steve) Spurrier, Coach Wolford and my recruiting coach, Coach Lawing, and the chance to play in the SEC, one of the best conferences in the country," he listed as the reasons he chose the Gamecocks.
Robinson also camped at UNC. The Tar Heels wanted to see more film, and he could have decided to wait it out to see if they, or other potential suitors, offered. But he says he knew the time was right to end the process.
"I just wanted to get it over with before our season really starts," he said. "We've already started with practices, but I just wanted to get something off my mind so I can focus on this year."
Robinson says there are several aspects of his game he is currently working hard to improve for his final season as a Ram.
"Probably my foot speed, agility and stuff like that," he says. "We work on that most of the time at our summer workouts, just getting our speed up so we can be quicker as a team. So, probably my quickness."
One thing Robinson doesn't have to work on is his attitude. Havelock head coach Jim Bob Bryant called him the smartest lineman he's ever coached. But Robinson downplays that statement.
"I mean I just try to do what the coaches tell me," he says. "I try to do my best every play. I like run-blocking; I like to be physical. That's about it."
Robinson will bring that winning attitude to Columbia in the not-so-distant future. He offered up a glimpse of what he hopes is to come.
"I just hope it's great football, great seasons, a chance to win the SEC Championship," he says. "Just some great football."
