Peach State OL names favorite

Etowah (Woodstock, GA) standout lineman Elliot Williams played on both lines of scrimmage as a senior in high school, but college coaches around the southeast believe he has the frame and athleticism to develop into an elite offensive tackle at the next level. Two SEC programs have been battling atop Williams' list of favorites for the past few months, but one is now emerging as the team to beat.

Elliot Williams, who measures in at an athletic 6'6" and 275 pounds, has scholarship offers from Auburn, South Carolina, Marshall and Central Florida. He is also receiving strong interest from programs like Clemson, Alabama and Mississippi State. However, the tandem of Auburn and South Carolina have been a fixture atop his list of favorites for some time, and Williams discussed what he likes about each program.

"South Carolina and Auburn are my top two," said Williams. "I like Coach Steve Spurrier, and South Carolina's recruiting me the hardest. With Auburn, I like the environment. The crowd is crazy."

When asked if an individual favorite is emerging between his top two schools, Williams replied succinctly, "South Carolina."

Williams, who is being recruited by Coach Shane Beamer for the Gamecocks, was on hand for USC's game against Florida a few weeks ago, and he came away impressed with what South Carolina has to offer.

"I went to South Carolina to see their game (against Florida). I saw the weight room, the coaches' offices, and I got to meet Coach Steve Spurrier. He said I was good enough to play on either side of the ball and that I could help them out a lot. I had a good time."

According to Williams, he is planning on setting up official visits with both South Carolina and Auburn in the near future, and he hopes to have a decision made shortly after the holidays.

"I'll probably make a commitment after Christmas."

Williams has been a three year starter on the gridiron and helped lead his Etowah team to a 7-3 record this fall, but he also excels on the basketball court and on the track and field team where he throws shot put. He bench presses 320 pounds and has been timed as low as 5.1 seconds in the forty yard dash.
