Inside Carolina traveled to Jonesboro, Ga. to pick up game film of recruiting target Martin Ward. …
Peach State "slasher" names favorite
The 5'9", 188 pound Ward, who claims offers from Ole Miss, South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and Clemson, originally committed to the home state Bulldogs last fall, but he de-committed from UGA in May and now has a new frontrunner in the race for his services.
"That would be South Carolina. They're my favorite," said Ward. "I like their coaches, their environment and the way they get along with their players. Coach (Tyrone) Nix calls me just about every week, right before a game. He says I could compete for early playing time. They tell me I'm the missing piece and the guy they want."
Ward was scheduled to visit Columbia this weekend to take in South Carolina's SEC home opener against Mississippi State, but that visit has now been delayed another week.
"I was supposed to go there this weekend, but I'm going to reschedule because I've got a game (on Saturday). I'll probably go for the Kentucky game (next Thursday)."
When asked what his plans are on a timeframe for his decision, Ward said he'll likely wait until the end of his senior season to make a commitment, but he could consider pulling the trigger when he visits USC next week.
"I'm pretty much looking toward the end of the season or the middle of the season, but the end of the season is most likely. I might think about committing (on my South Carolina visit), but I'm leaning towards the end of the season."
According to Ward, he'll look for one key factor when the time comes to decide on the school of his choice.
"Academics are the main thing. I want to make sure I can keep my grades straight. I can make my own playing time, and I can get on the field, but I really want to keep my grades up."
Ward, who runs a 4.5 second forty yard dash, closed by describing what type of threat he brings to the running back position.
"I'm a slasher. I can be a downhill runner at times, but I like to make people miss. I'm pretty diverse."
As a junior last season, Ward rushed for 1,379 yards and 15 touchdowns, while boasting a stellar 9.3 yards per carry. He also totaled 11 catches for 181 yards and 1 touchdown as a receiving threat out of the backfield.
