Taylor Visits USC, Talks Favorites

Coach Shane Beamer and the Gamecocks welcomed in one of the most athletic prospects in the Palmetto State's class of 2008 on Saturday night, as Beaufort (SC) stud defensive end Devin Taylor made an unofficial visit to Columbia to take in the Gamecocks' 38-3 win over S.C. State. Read inside to find out how Taylor's visit went and where Carolina now stands among his favorite schools.

The 6'6", 215 pound Devin Taylor, who runs a 4.59 second forty yard dash, possesses the type of raw athleticism that every college coach looks for in a defensive lineman. Thus, in a continuing effort to upgrade the talent level on the defensive line and build quality depth for the future, South Carolina has made Taylor a priority in this recruiting class.

The Gamecocks played host to Taylor on Saturday night, and the Palmetto State standout got to meet with several of the South Carolina coaches and players while on campus.

"I had a good time at South Carolina. I got to meet some of the players and coaches and a few of the recruits that were there," said Taylor. "I talked with Mike Davis, Kenny McKinley, Brian Maddox, Cory Boyd and Jasper Brinkley. They were all cool. I met with my recruiter, Shane Beamer. He told me that I could be a good addition to the school and that they want me to be a part of the Gamecock family."

According to Taylor, he was also very impressed by USC's game day atmosphere and the play he saw on the field.

"It was a very good atmosphere. They've got some good athletes on the field on offense and defense, and they rotated their defensive line quite often. I saw Clifton Geathers and Cliff Matthews in there a lot."

Another factor that stood out to Taylor on Saturday was the fan support for the Gamecock players.

"I liked how everyone loved the players there, even the ones that were on the sideline. The fan support is great."

As far as favorites go, Taylor is maintaining a top four list of schools, but he acknowledged that the Gamecocks helped their chances over the weekend.

"It's still about the same. I'm looking at Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, Central Florida and USC. I definitely had a good time at USC though. They're close to home, and they have a good program."

Taylor, who said he hopes to make an official visit to South Carolina later this fall, knows when he would like to make a commitment and what factors he will look for when deciding on the school of his choice.

"I'll probably make a commitment around November. I'll look at the athletes that graduate from the college, class sizes, and the atmosphere at the school."

Taylor also said he plans to visit Duke, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech in the coming months, but he does not have dates set yet. Taylor has helped lead Beaufort to a 2-1 record so far this fall, and he had 15 tackles in the loss to Goose Creek last week.
