Sunshine State WR Names Favorites

In the 2007 recruiting class, South Carolina was able to invade the talent rich state of Florida and land top wide receiver prospects Matt Clements, Joseph Hills and Dion Lecorn. The Gamecocks are hoping to continue that success in Florida this year, as they are making a strong push for one of the premier receiver targets in the Sunshine State's class of 2008. Read inside for all the details.

Kathleen Senior (Lakeland, FL) 3-star wide receiver T.J. Lawrence is considered by many to be one of the top playmakers in the Sunshine State this year. Lawrence, who racked up 52 catches for 1,245 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior last season, currently has twenty-three offers to his credit, including tenders from South Carolina, Florida, LSU, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Boise State and several others. However, according to Lawrence, four schools have separated themselves from the rest of the pack in the race for his services.

"Florida, South Carolina, Virginia Tech and Boise State stand out right now," said Lawrence.

The 6'1", 195 pound Lawrence described what stands out to him about each of his four favorite schools.

Florida - "They were the national champs last year, and they spread the ball around. Their offense scores a lot, and they like to use the receivers."

South Carolina - "They pass the ball a lot. I know Steve Spurrier's going to pass the ball. Coach (David) Reaves is recruiting me for them. I talk to him a little bit, and he's pretty cool. He's down to earth."

Virginia Tech - "They're one of the best teams in the country, and Brandon Flowers from my school went there. I'll probably go up there and check things out."

Boise State - "I like their whole program. They have an exciting program, and I know they're on the uprise."

Lawrence has made unofficial visits to Florida and Virginia Tech thus far, but he is looking forward to making official visits to each of his four favorites this fall.

"I'm taking my official visits to the four (schools) I named. I don't know if I'll take my fifth visit or not, but I want to see what (my top four schools) have to offer."

The athletic receiving target, who runs a 4.5 second forty yard dash and has a 36-inch vertical leap, plans to make a decision on his college choice by the end of his senior season.

"I'll probably commit later in the season at the end of the year. I just want to (take my visits) and see if the coaches are cool. Then if I feel at home somewhere, that's where I'm going to go."

Lawrence closed by describing what sets him apart as a wide receiver on the football field.

"I'm a playmaker. I want the ball in the clutch. My strengths as a wide receiver are my strength and my hands. If DB's try to come up and jam me, they won't jam me because I won't allow it. Other than that, I use my speed and my size to make plays."

Lawrence, who bench presses 270 pounds and squats 350, also played safety last season, recording 5 interceptions. He reports a 2.5 core GPA and a 17 on the ACT.
