Sleeper DT Closing In On Decision

Sleeper DT Closing In On Decision

The Gamecocks landed a big commitment from Newberry (SC) 3-star defensive tackle Kenny Davis over the weekend, and they now appear to be on the verge of landing another athletic defensive line target to solidify the interior of their defensive front for years to come. Read inside for all the details.

Stockbridge (GA) sleeper defensive tackle Randy Salmon has managed to fly beneath the proverbial recruiting radar so far this year, but with a 6'3", 290 pound frame and uncanny athleticism for a player his size, Salmon possesses the physical tools to develop into a top flight interior lineman on the college level.

While Salmon's still an unknown commodity to most major football programs around the southeast, a handful of schools have extended offers his way, including South Carolina, NC State, Troy, Southern Miss, UAB, Louisiana Tech and a few others. However, according to Salmon, one school has been recruiting him the longest and has emerged as the team to beat for his services.

"All the other schools offered me later, but before any of that, South Carolina saw me on film and offered me right off the bat," said Salmon. "I went to go see their school last month, and I was very impressed. I'm real impressed with their facilities, and by the time I get there, I think they'll be a really good program. Also, they said they had some (d-linemen) leave and that I'm one of their top recruits on the defensive line."

Salmon, who racked up 80 tackles, 7 sacks and 3 forced fumbles as a junior last season, talked more in depth about his visit to Columbia in early July.

"They showed me the campus, the stadium, the weight room and all that stuff. They showed me the academic buildings and talked to me about academics. They told me how their tutoring and everything works. It was a really good visit, and they're not too far away from home."

The Peach State standout is being recruited by Coach Tyrone Nix for the Gamecocks, and Salmon said he has developed a strong bond with Nix through the recruiting process.

"Coach Nix is recruiting me, and he's like real close and personal with me. He'll be real with you and tell you what's good for you and how you can be the best person you can be."

With South Carolina as his clear favorite, Salmon is waiting for his school to send his academic transcripts to USC so that the Gamecocks can officially accept his commitment.

"They're waiting to get my transcripts in to see if I can officially commit. I asked my counselor about that today, and she said she'll try to get them in as soon as possible. Once that happens, I'll probably commit to South Carolina."

Salmon, who said he might also visit NC State before ultimately making a commitment, described what type of player he is on the football field.

"I'm strong. I'm fast for my size. I run a 4.9 (forty yard dash), and I just see myself as a dominating and explosive player offer the ball."

Salmon prides himself on being a fixture in the weight room, as he benches 365 pounds, power cleans 315 and squats 535.
