Jay Spearman: The Complete Package

Few high school football prospects around the country possess the unique combination of athletic gifts, intelligence, dedication and leadership that new South Carolina commitment Jay Spearman brings to the table. The Greenwood (SC) star athlete truly is the complete package both on and off the football field. Read inside for full story.

Jay Spearman had been a South Carolina fan all of his life, and as an emerging prospect on the recruiting scene, there was really only one offer he was waiting to receive. After being tendered that much anticipated offer from his Gamecock recruiter Brad Lawing on Monday night, Spearman didn't take long to pledge his commitment to USC and bring the recruiting process to a close.

Most Gamecock supporters will look at Spearman's blazing 4.36 second forty yard dash time and his uncanny 41-inch vertical leap and begin to imagine the possibilities of how an athlete of his caliber can change football games on the next level, but there is more to Jay Spearman than just scoring touchdowns and bringing fans to their feet on game day. According to Greenwood High School Head Football Coach Shell Dula, Spearman is just as special off the field as he is on it.

"Jay is a first class young man, who comes from a great family. His family has done a great job of raising him and helping him understand priorities and the difference between right and wrong," said Dula. "He shows discipline in the classroom. He's got one ‘C' on his transcript while he's been at Greenwood High School, so that says quite a bit for him. He's totally qualified, and that's always a big plus. He's a class act, a good student and certainly was very vital to our football team last year."

Dula, who coached Greenwood to the 4-A State Championship last season, was also quick to point out Spearman's willingness to work and his team-first attitude.

"He's a hard worker, he's dedicated, he understands the game and he puts people around him in position to be successful. He throws an easy ball to catch and sets up his blocks well. I think he's honest and straight forward, and kids respect that about him. When he steps into the huddle, he's earned their respect. He led us to a state championship (last season) and played extremely well for us at quarterback, and we anticipate him doing the same thing for us this year."

As far as what Spearman brings to the football field, Dula believes his dynamic quarterback has several traits that help him be successful on game days.

"First of all, I think it's his intelligence, his work ethic and his ability to run the football. Not to take anything away from his throwing ability, because he's an excellent passer, but he's a great runner. Jay made a lot of big plays for us last year. Certainly he turned some three and four yard gains into fifty and sixty yard gains. He threw the ball extremely well in the state championship game and made several plays there. He‘s done a lot of very positive things for us in a lot of ways."

Lastly, while South Carolina is recruiting the versatile Spearman to play either wide receiver or defensive back on the college level, Dula isn't so sure that his veteran signal-caller won't surprise the USC coaches with his ability at quarterback once he arrives in Columbia.

"I don't want to strike out quarterback. I'll be honest with you, with his intelligence and willingness to work, I think he's got a chance to be a college quarterback. He's throwing the ball extremely often over the offseason. He's gone out in his own backyard and thrown, and he's working on improving his throwing. I think he has, and that's why I'm not so sure he won't be a college quarterback. He's made a lot of strides there, and we'll just have to wait and see, but he certainly has improved his ability to throw the football."
