Culliver makes it official: He's a Gamecock

One of the worst kept secrets of the recruiting season became one of the best commitments of the best recruiting class in Gamecock history. Chris Culliver, the 4-Star wide receiver/safety from Garner NC made his commitment to USC official Wednesday afternoon. GamecockAnthem was there to bring you all the happenings.

Culliver said, ""It's South Carolina. I'm going to be a Gamecock."

Culliver's position coach at Garner High School, Corey Lyons, talked about what his highly coveted player brings to the football field: "Speed is the name of the game these days, and he's got tons of it," he said. "He's a little rough around the edges like a lot kids coming out of high school. He's got a great work ethic, and he's a strong kid. The coaches (at USC) tell him that he bench presses more than any of the other receivers down there at South Carolina right now. His speed kills out there, and he's got tons of it. If they get the ball in his hands, he's got a ton of athletic ability and he can do a lot of things with the ball." Culliver bench presses 300 pounds.

The 6'0" 190 pound Culliver is the #12 ranked safety in the country by Scout.com, but South Carolina coveted him for his abilities as a receiver. He runs a blazing 4.38 in the forty yard dash. When asked what kind of impact will he make on the next level, Lyons said, "I can see him making an immediate impact at South Carolina. He's got great leadership qualities, and he's always encouraging his teammates to come work out. No one works out harder in the off season, in the weight room, or out there running. He's definitely a good leader out there."

"He does a great job showing the younger kids the work ethic necessary if they have aspirations to go to the next level." Lyons continued. "Garner's always had a strong tradition and has been a powerhouse in this area. He's done a good job of showing the younger kids what it takes to keep the program in good standing around here. He's definitely meant a lot to the program he's meant a lot to Garner and a lot to the community. He is a great kid and he's been a joy to work with throughout his career here."

Culliver had narrowed his choices down to SEC rivals Florida and South Carolina before picking the Steve Spurrier and the Gamecocks. He also had offers from Florida State, Alabama, Clemson, Wake Forest, N.C. St., and Virginia Tech.
