As planned, Weslye Saunders traveled to Chapel Hill Sunday to meet newly hired North Carolina tight…
Saunders Sets Announcement Date
The 6'5, 270 pound Saunders, who is rated the #17 tight end in the country by Scout.com, shared his thoughts on the recruiting process and named the two finalists still in the race for his services.
"Everything's going pretty good. It's getting ready to come to a close pretty soon," said Saunders. "It's basically down to North Carolina and South Carolina right now."
Saunders, who dropped Louisville from his list of favorites after Coach Bobby Petrino left for the NFL, discussed what he likes about each of his two favorite schools.
South Carolina - "With South Carolina, I like Coach Spurrier and the way his style is. He's not scared to switch it up at the drop of a dime if something's not working. If something's working, he'll go to it."
North Carolina - "Coach Butch Davis has a history of tight ends, and my familiarity with North Carolina is definitely a large part of it. That's what I like about them."
The Tar Heel State standout was previously scheduled to make an official visit to South Carolina this weekend, along with a trip to Chapel Hill the following weekend, but he recently decided to switch those two visits around.
"I'm going to North Carolina this weekend and South Carolina the weekend after that. (Coach Fred Chatham) from South Carolina just decided that it would be better if I came on the 19th, because more recruits would be down there to hang with and there would be more stuff to do."
Saunders has gotten to know several players that are committed to each of his two finalists through the recruiting process and various all-star events, and as a result, he is in a tough spot by having friends from both sides working him to pick their school.
"Ryan Houston is working me a lot for North Carolina. He's trying to get me to come down there a lot. For South Carolina, my boy Mark Barnes and Jason Barnes are trying to get me to come down there."
With the recruiting process winding down, Saunders believes he will come to a decision sometime after making his official visits, and he will announce his choice at a school banquet in early February.
"I'll do it on February 5th. We're having a banquet at my high school, and that's where I'll probably announce it."
