Joseph Hills: I Wanted To Be a Gamecock

Palmetto High School (Palmetto, FL) star wide receiver Joseph Hills committed to Coach David Reaves and the South Carolina Gamecocks this afternoon. The 6'4, 210 pound Hills claimed offers from major schools like Georgia, LSU, Louisville, and Nebraska, but in the end, South Carolina was the place that felt like home. "I committed to South Carolina today. I wanted to be a Gamecock," said Hills. "I had a great visit there. My family liked it, the academics, and it's just a great place to play."

Hills, who totaled over 600 yards receiving with 11 touchdowns this season, said that the opportunity to play in Steve Spurrier's offense was an important factor in his decision to become a Gamecock.

"Coach Steve Spurrier's name means a lot. He has a great track record, and I just wanted to be a wide receiver in that system."

The talented Sunshine State prospect likes the potential for early playing time at USC, and he is hoping to make an early impact when he arrives in Columbia.

"They told me they weren't that deep with receivers, but they're looking for them. They told me I have the potential of coming in and playing early. If everything plays out right, then you'll see me on ESPN someday."

When Hills made an official visit to South Carolina a couple of weeks ago, he hit it off well with fellow Gamecock wide receiver commitment Larry Freeman, and they are talking about possibly rooming with one another at USC.

"Me and Larry Freeman are friends. He committed earlier to South Carolina, and we were up there and hanging out having a good time. We've kind of developed a quick friendship, a quick bond. Hopefully we can be roommates or something like that."

Hills says that the thought of competing for championships with the up-and-coming Gamecocks is exciting, and he hopes he can contribute to that success beginning next season..

"Oh yeah, I'm looking forward to (competing for championships). I hope I can be a big impact player when I get there, so I can have something to do with all that. I just want to make plays."

When asked to describe himself on the football field, the versatile Hills said that he is an all around player, but he still has areas he would like to improve in.

"I'm more of a deep threat type of guy, but I can still go across the middle and get the short yardage. I would say I'm an all around player… I need to improve on coming out of my cuts at full speed, and when I'm about to make a cut, my arms stop moving every once in a while. I still have a lot of little things I need to polish up."

Lastly, Hills wanted to send a shout out to all of the Gamecock fans that are excited about his commitment.

"Tell all the Gamecocks fans I said, "What's happenin‘?"
