Chris Smelley Talks About Injury

Freshman quarterback Chris Smelley wowed fans, coaches, and teammates with his play in fall camp and in the first two games of the year, but a nagging heel injury may cause the talented signal caller to take a medical redshirt and miss the remainder of the season. GamecockAnthem.com caught up with Smelley after Wednesday's practice, and he commented on his injury situation.

Question: How's your heel injury coming along?

Answer: I haven't been doing as much stuff out here in practice, so we're just going to see how it goes.

Question: How did you first injure your heel?

Answer: It's been hurting ever since practice started, and it's gotten a little worse. I've gotten some things done to it, and I've been getting some treatment on it for the past few weeks. We're just going to see how it goes.

Question: After having such a strong fall camp and playing well in the first two games, how do you respond to a frustrating injury like this?

Answer: It'd be great to be out here and helping the team and doing all that, but the team's getting better, and we had a good practice today.

Question: Do you believe that this will be a season ending injury?

Answer: I really don't know. I'm just going to continue getting treatment on it and getting it looked at and see how it goes.

Question: Would you prefer to play through it or sit out this year? What would your preference be?

Answer: Whatever, I guess. Just talk to the coaches.
