Web Brown Is "Mr. Versatility"
Posted Aug 14, 2006
It is no secret that the Gamecock offensive line lacks quality depth this season, but junior Web Brown will play an important role in the offensive line rotation this season with his ability to play both guard spots, as well as center. GamecockAnthem recently caught up with Brown, and he shared his thoughts on a variety of topics.
Question: Heading into the fall, you were listed as the starting right guard, but in practice you are working as the backup center. Where do you see yourself playing this year?
Answer: Last year it was the same thing. I was at guard and backup center. Right now we’ve got some freshmen in there trying to earn a spot, and everyone is in the mix. The depth chart is not going to really be secure until the week of the first game.
Question: Could you potentially play both offensive guard and center this year?
Answer: Anywhere is open right now, so I think that anybody who wants to jump up and grab a spot is going to grab it. I’m looking forward to grabbing one of the guard or center spots.
Question: What are your thoughts on the young freshman offensive linemen?
Answer: They have come in, and they are working really hard. They’ve proven themselves out here a lot, and they are doing a good job. I think they are one of the better freshman O-line classes we’ve had here. They’ve come in working hard from the first day and are giving effort. They’re picking up the plays really well.
Question: What is it like working under Offensive Line Coach
Answer: Coach Hunt is a great coach. He’s really pushing us to learn our plays, and he’s really helping us in the media room to understand everything. He and (Graduate Assistant) Cedric (Williams) are working together to get us straightened up for the first game, so I’m really enjoying it under Coach Hunt.
Question: What are your expectations for the offensive line this season, and do you expect to be better than last year?
Answer: Every year there’s room for improvement. With the experience we have coming back, we’re going to step it up this year, and we’re going to play real well. We’re going to be the best we can out there, and I think we’re going to do real well this year.
Question: What do you believe that the offense, as a whole, is capable of this season?
Answer: I think if the O-line can step it up and do better than we did last year, then we have everyone else back. I think we have the potential to do really good things this year.
