The South Carolina coaching staff has started off the 2006 recruiting campaign by landing commitments from two of the top cornerbacks in the southeast. After landing highly touted corner Gary Gray back in March, South Carolina received a surprise commitment on Thursday evening from star cornerback Addison Williams out of Westlake High School in Atlanta, GA.
Addison Williams
, who was one of the top defensive performers at the recent Clemson NIKE camp, came to this decision based on a couple of factors.
“I liked my recruiter, Coach Ron Cooper. They were really just the school that I liked the most, and I would have a chance to go in and play early. I think I can go in and compete for playing time (immediately).”
Williams, who recorded 32 tackles and 6 interceptions in his junior season, has warranted attention from recruiters all around the Southeast, including being tendered several impressive scholarship offers.
“Quite a few schools have been recruiting me, but I had scholarship offers from Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, South Carolina, Tulane, and Indiana.”
The 5’9, 170 lb. Williams has been clocked below 4.4 seconds in the forty yard dash, and he believes that he possesses several strengths as a player.
“My strengths as a player are my ability to play man to man coverage, my aggressiveness, and my ability to play special teams as a kick returner or punt returner.”
In fact, Williams is looking forward to competing as a return specialist when he comes to Carolina.
“I would like to be a kick returner or punt returner at Carolina before it’s all over.”
Williams plans to attend the South Carolina camp on June 10, and he looks forward to meeting the two other current Gamecock commitments,
Gary Gray
and
Quintin Richardson
.
“Both of them (Gary Gray and Quintin Richarson) called me today. We’ll be up at Carolina on June 10. It’s going to be great. I can’t wait for it.”
Williams is looking forward to coming to Carolina, but he still plans to enjoy his senior year in high school. Williams has even set a couple of goals for his senior football season.
“For my senior season, I want to have a better season and make my senior year my best year so far.”
Lastly, Williams wanted to share one message with all Gamecock fans.
“I can’t wait to have you cheering for me.”
