USC's head baseball coach, Ray Tanner has made the decision to keep his focus solely on the team as he officially withdraws his name from the list of contenders for the position as USC Athletics' Director...
Coach Tanner met with current AD, Dr. Mike McGee yesterday. Tanner is in his ninth year as head coach for the USC baseball team and stated his desire to remain focused on this year's baseball season. He indicated the timing just wasn't right for this type of move.
McGee announced he would relinquish his position with USC on June 30, 2005 to spend more time with his family.
The replacement of Dr. McGee rests firmly on the shoulders of USC President, Dr. Andrew Sorenson. It is clear that Dr. Sorenson intends to control those reigns tightly and has no intention of sharing possible candidates with the media.
While fans clamor for information, many are relieved that Coach Tanner is no longer in the running. Tanner is among the best loved of Carolina coaches. His success on the baseball diamond has given the Gamecock faithful something to be proud of for many years.
Though early in the 2005 season, many are already making plans for their trip to Omaha for the College World Series. It is Tanner's consistancy that prompts the fans to put so much stock in his ultimate success. Coach Ray's determination to remain focused on this season is further proof to the Gamecocks that they are his priority and pushes expectations even higher.
