Andrew Bunch from Mt. Pleasant, S.C. lines up as no. 21 on the roster for the 2014 season. The wide receiver joined the team as a walk-on last fall, after playing at Presbyterian College and will be eligible for the first time this year
During his high school career, the 5-foot-11, 173 sophomore was named the Division II-AA Player of the year and set the school record for touchdowns.
Sharing the number on the roster is linebacker Marcquis Roberts. The linebacker hails from Powder Springs, Ga.and will be a fourth-year sophomore. The McEachern High School-alum battled injuries his first two seasons with the garnet and black.
In 2011, Roberts underwent shoulder surgery, enrolling as a medical redshirt. Following that year, 2012 brought on new challenges for Roberts with a knee injury.
2013 brought new changes for the 6-foot-1, 216 pound athlete. He played in all 13 games, starting each of the first eight and the bowl game. He’s currently listed as the third-team behind T.J. Holloman and Kaiwan Lewis.
However, with day seven of practice upon the Gamecocks, linebackers coach Kirk Botkin says there are no definite front-runners yet and the key to a front seat ticket is consistency.
“That’s one thing we are working on, just getting more consistent, all the little things we’re doing, just lining up right, all the different things,” Botkins said.
And to be consistent, comes with practice, and practice makes perfect.
“That’s kind of the way it is when you first start practices, everybody is kind of working on different things and everybody has something different to work on,” Botkin said. “There’s no perfect football players right now, and they’re all trying to get better.”
