South Carolina: O-Line Notes from Thompson

Quarterback Dylan Thompson notes on his O-line, and the Gamecocks ability to dominate the field this year.

South Carolina’s Dylan Thompson has stepped up to the plate as quarterback for the 2014 season. The Boiling Springs-native is a fifth year senior and 3-0 starter for the Gamecocks. This year, Thompson is quoted to be a leader on and off the field, and notes its a pretty fun job.

“I don’t think there will be any pressure as a team leader. Being a leader is fun for me; not just in football, but in life. Being a leader is about caring about people, and that’s what I try to do with our team. We have great relationships within our team and our staff,” Thompson said.

Building a relationship within the offensive line is something Thompson says is very special and a nice touch on the field.

“It’s a huge blessing to be behind those guys. Every time I go in to work out, the linemen are in there every morning grinding and putting in extra work. Knowing that the guys care about what they do and want to be great themselves is really encouraging.”

Junior tailback Mike Davis will certainly play a big part in the offensive line this year.5-foot-9, 233 pounds Davis logged the fourth-most single-season rushing yards in the school’s history last season.

“Mike (Davis) is a great player. Fortunately for our team, we have a lot of guys that can get the job done. Mike is a great player and a great guy. It does take some pressure off of you as far as running game, but I think that starts with our offensive line. We have a great line, and Mike is going to have a great year,” noted Thompson.

South Carolina has a lot of its offensive players back and has a chance to have one of that best O-lines in the school’s history.

Center RS-sophomore Cody Waldrop is labeled in Phil Steele’s 2014 Projected Lineup for the Gamecocks and will be an important part of play. The 6-foot-2, 309 pound Florida-native made six career starts last year and was named to the Rimington Award preseason watch list this year.

Another huge addition to the offensive line will be left guard A.J. Cann. The RS-senior is another leader on the squad and has a team-high 38 career starts, starting every games but one the past three seasons.

The Gamecocks offense has a big role to play in this upcoming season. The 2014 year has a lot in store for South Carolina, and only time will reveal its fate.
