Each day creeps a little closer to August 28th. The University of South Carolina has 52 days until the kick-off against Texas A&M in Columbia. Not only is 52 a significant number to Gamecock fans everywhere, but to the Gamecock roster as well.
Phillip Dukes stands at No. 52 on the 2014 roster as a defensive tackle for the garnet and black. Dukes is a redshirt junior from Manning, S.C. who is listed as a probable starter for South Carolina this fall.
Dukes will be on the lookout to replace Kelcy Quarles, who is now training with the New York Giants. New to being a potential starter, the 6-foot-3, 322 pound DT played in all 13 games last season and has been featured in 18 total, with one game start.
This year, Duke will be standing next to redshirt and fifth-year senior J.T. Surratt this fall. He has made 14 career starts and is the only returning starter on the “D”-line. Last year, Surratt started all 13 games and nailed 33 tackles with 4.0 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. The 6-foot-2, 305 pound DT tied for the team high with six tackles. Phil Steele has Surratt on its 2014 Projected Starting Lineup for this fall, with Dukes following behind.
Standing on the offense, is No. 52 Bryce King. King is a redshirt freshman offensive guard and a Dillion, S.C.-native. Coming out of high school, he was one of the top prospects in the state with offers from other schools, such as Tennessee, Virginia, LSU, Clemson, and North Carolina.
Phil Steele has Bamberg (S.C.)-native A.J. Cann standing in this spot listed as a LG on it’s starting line up. Cann is said to be a leader for the Gamecocks on and off the field. With 38 career starts, this redshirt senior has started every game except for one in three seasons. Last season, Cann was voted permanent team captain.
