In today's world of recruiting, prospects are getting younger and younger. For example, the nine-year-old girl basketball prodigy who Miami was recruiting. She obviously shows ample talent and working with athletes young is the key to instilling successful traits and abilities to grow with. Most nine-year-olds are more worried about who will get the biggest slice of pizza, let alone a university.
However, our Class of 2017 prospects have quite a few years on the nine-year-old. These prospects have serious talent and offers to back it up. Here's a look at South Carolina's class of 2017 prospect list, thus far.
This 6'2', 191 pound wide receiver hails from Suwanee, Georgia. He was a standout to many at the Atlanta Nike Football Training Camp this past March and continues to impress receiving offers from South Carolina, Baylor, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota, Tennessee, and Virginia.
Grimes attends St. Thomas Aquinas in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The school has produced some big-name recruits in the class of 2015 line-up and is obviously continuing the trend. 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, has already caught the eyes of the Gamecocks and others. With offers from Auburn, Clemson, LSU, Syracuse, Tennessee, and UCF, Grimes will be one to watch.
Standing at 5'11", 160, Matthews is from Jacksonville, Florida. He has offers from over 10 schools like South Carolina, Auburn, Clemson, Tennessee, Georgia and Miami, just to name a few. Matthews scored eight touchdowns his freshman year and totaled 700 receiving yards on 37 receptions.
A South Carolina-native, the sophomore to be attends Union County High School in Union, S.C. He posted 35 receptions for 450 yards and two touchdowns his freshman season. The 5-foot-11, 170 pound WR has only received an offer from South Carolina, thus far. However, don't count on that being his only one. It has only just begun.
Ashley is one young man we have seen a lot out of. An Orlando (F.L.)-native, he plays at Dr. Phillips, who has a plethora of talent landing out of the program. Scout.com analyst Jamie Newberg noted Ashely looks similar to 5-star recruit Martez Ivey. The 6-foot-6, 265 pound all-star has big offers to back up his talents from eight schools, including South Carolina.
6-foot-2, 210 pound McBride is a Vidalia (G.A.)-native. DawgPost.com publisher Dean Legge reporterd he ran a 4.5-second 40-yard dash and holds offers from Georgia, South Carolina, and Georgia Tech. Those are quite the credentials for a rising sophomore.
Phenix City, Alabama is home to 6-foot-1, 212 pound prospect Markail Benton. As a ninth grader, Benton started in on of the toughest high school football regions in the state of Alabama and totaled 72 tackles. Scout's Chad Simmons listed Benton as one of the top-10 freshman to know last year and for good reason. This rising sophomore is off to a good start with scholarship offers from South Carolina, Kentucky, Auburn, and Alabama. That's four SEC schools in just one-year of high school football. Look out, because this guy will be on your radar for sure in the seasons to come.
This Hinesville, G.A.-native was regarded at one of the top defensive backs in the state of Georgia by Scout.com's Chad Simmons. At the Nike Football Training Camp this past March, Simmons noted LeCounte played corner and safety. This 6-foot-1, 171 pound all-star already has over 15 scholarship offers from various schools, including South Carolina, Alabama, Ohio State, and Florida State just to name a few.
Bamberg, South Carolina's own, Cann stands at 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds. Chad Simmons also included Cann on his "10 Freshman to Know" list last September, stating he plays with a lot of maturity for his age and is very smart in the secondary. Schools like Clemson, Georgia, and Tennessee were expressing interest in this prospect fresh out of middle school. Cann's potential has no bounds and will be a big name in the future for sure. Older brother, A.J. Cann, currently plays at the University of South Carolina. He has offers from South Carolina and Virginia Tech, thus far.
