Newell To Attend KU Junior Day

Charlie Weis is working hard to rebuild the Kansas football program, and in-state pass rusher Peyton Newell has taken notice. The three-star defensive end has accepted an invitation to KU's Junior Day after Weis visited Hiawatha High School on Tuesday. Go Inside for more on Newell and the Jayhawks…

Charlie Weis has been a busy man over the past few months. Since his first season as Head Coach of the Kansas Jayhawks ended at West Virginia on December 1, Weis has recruited tirelessly in search of talent to improve on KU's 1-11 record.

With most of Kansas' 2013 class in the fold and waiting to make it official on National Signing Day, Weis and his staff have turned their attention to 2014. On Tuesday, Weis made his way to Hiawatha, Kansas, home of three-star defensive end Peyton Newell.

Weis met with Head Coach Chris Diller, and Newell was excited to hear what the Jayhawks had to say.

"Due to regulations, I couldn't talk to him," Newell said of Weis' visit. "But my coach said that they are very interested in me, and really want me to be a Jayhawk."

The 2014 class stands to be among the best ever in The Sunflower State, with Newell ranked near the top. The 6-foot-3, 280-pound all-state defender is among the most sought-after recruits in the country with a staggering 22 scholarship offers. He could be a keystone in Weis' rebuilding effort in Lawrence, and the junior believes the former NFL assistant can get it done.

"I think Coach Weis brings something to the Kansas program they haven't had in the past," he said. "I think over time, with his ways, he can start something special at KU."

Newell's family tree is filled with Jayhawks, counting over 30 Kansas alums, including his father, Frank, a former KU football player. As a multi-generational legacy, it seems only fitting that Weis invited him to Kansas Junior Day.

"We are going to Junior Day on February 16th," he said, a big smile spreading across his face. "Yes we are, and we are definitely looking forward to it."
