UT opens SEC with win over SC

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Lady Vols opened the SEC slate with a 73-53 win over South Carolina. Go inside with InsideTennessee for a quick recap.

Tennessee (10-3, 1-0) used a stiff zone defense and hot shooting to scoot past South Carolina (12-2, 0-1).

It was the first win in the SEC in the Holly Warlick era and it came at a tough venue as the Gamecocks had used stingy defense to hold 10 opponents to under 50 points.

But the Lady Vols, behind 50.0 percent shooting, and contributions inside and out, got 73 against South Carolina, led by 18 each by Isabelle Harrison and Taber Spani. Both players tied career highs.

The Lady Vols led by just one point at halftime, 32-31, and then lost the lead to open the second half. They went on a 12-0 run - aided by South Carolina missing 11 straight field goals, and put the game out of reach.

"It was a tale of two halves," Warlick said.

Harrison set two career highs - blocks with seven and boards with 14.

Ariel Massengale tallied 13 points, and Meighan Simmons added 10.

South Carolina was led by Tiffany Mitchell with 14 points, while Ashley Bruner had 12 and Ieasia Walker added 10.
