Vanderbilt News and Notes 12/11/2012

(Don McPeak-US PRESSWIRE)

With the men's basketball team off until December 15th for exams there is very little on the field or court going on this weekend. Here are some news and notes from around the athletic department.

Additional tickets requested to the Music City Bowl

It was announced by the athletic department on Friday afternoon that Vanderbilt had sold out of their initial allocation of 12,000 tickets AND the first additional amount requested. According to director of sales and marketing Steve Walsh, "Our fans have done a tremendous job in selling out our entire initial allotment along with our additional requests in just five days. It's a clear signal that the Vanderbilt community and college football fans in this market are very excited about Commodore football."

Analysis: With the way Vanderbilt was treated when it came to bowl allocation I don' think it is possible to underestimate how important it was for Vandy to roll through the initial ticket allocation. The powers that be at the bowls need to know that Commodore fans are committed to their team and will pay to go to bowls to watch them play. The more additional tickets the 'Dores can sell the better they look and maybe next year there will be less jobbing involved when the pairings are announced.

Kyle Fuller lights it up

Almost hidden in a week where the bowl game was announced and James Franklin signed a perhaps program defining contract was the fact that Vandy stepped up in overtime to beat Xavier on the hardwood in Cincinnati. Junior guard Kyle Fuller scored all 12 points for the 'Dores in overtime, part of a career high 25, as part of a roaring comeback victory.

Analysis: The 3-4 Commodores needed this in the worst way. This was always going to be something of a rebuilding season when you consider everything that the team lost to graduation and the NBA, but even then losses to teams like Marist are completely unacceptable. The break that the 'Dores are on right now will give them time to refocus and hopefully come out big with winnable games against Alabama A&M and Cornell on the immediate horizon.
