Kelly Bryant was named Abbeville High School’s starting quarterback as a freshman. In his first year under center, Bryant led his team to its second straight 1A state championship. With great size (6-foot-4, 195 pounds), great speed, and a strong arm college coaching staffs are already pursuing Bryant.
“I have offers from Clemson and South Carolina,” said Kelly Bryant. “I’m also interested in Florida State, Georgia, and Ohio State.”
The summer was a busy time for Bryant, who worked hard to improve his game.
“I camped at Clemson, Georgia, and Furman,” he said. “I’ve worked on my throwing mechanics, my speed, and ability to break down defenses.”
With two offers already on the table, the signal-caller knows some of the schools he will visit this fall.
“I’m going to visit Clemson and South Carolina,” Bryant said. “I know I’m going to visit Clemson when they play Furman because one of our players just signed there (Furman). I’m not sure when I will go to South Carolina, but I will have to see when the time comes.”
After one full season as the starter at quarterback, Bryant is much more confident than he was a year ago.
“Last season, I didn’t know what to expect – I was still learning – and I’m still learning,” he said. “But now, I have more of an idea of what to expect. I know I can get players in the right situation and get them the ball to make big plays.”
Bryant has high goals for his sophomore season.
“Team-wise, we just want to come together each week and get better,” he said. “We just want to grow as one and eventually work our way towards a state championship. Being a running team, my individual goals are to rush for 1,000 yards and pass for 800. But none of that really matters to me as long as the team gets better.”
Last season, Bryant threw for 397 yards, rushed for 669 yards, and accounted for 12 total touchdowns. Abbeville opens its season tonight against Greenville.
