Matt Rolin wouldn't admit it earlier this week -- but there were some definite signs that the four-star LB from Briar Wood HS in Ashburn, Ga. would commit to South Carolina on his visit to Columbia this weekend.
Rolin wasted little time and committed to Shawn Elliott and the Gamecocks' staff Friday afternoon then announced the news on Twitter.
"Can't spell South caROLINa without Rolin!" he announced. "Committed to The University of South caROLINa!!!! #GamecockNation"
He chose the Gamecocks over offers from Virginia Tech, Florida, Georgia and Florida State, among many others.
The 6-foot-4, 205-pound prospect is considered the No. 13 outside linebacker in the country by Scout.com.
Rolin said earlier this week that his father, mother and sister were to accompany him on the trip.
Both of Rolin's parents attended South Carolina and his grandfather played defensive back for the Gamecocks. He also has family in South Carolina that he will be spending the rest of the weekend with.
"I feel a family connection there," he said of South Carolina in an interview with Gamecock Anthem earlier this week. "I really have a good relationship with Coach Elliott. I just really like the campus and I think I fit in well with the scheme they have there."
Rolin was offered as both a tight end and linebacker by the Gamecocks, but is probably most needed on the defensive side of the ball. The 6-foot-4, 205-pounder describes himself as long and versatile. How does he see himself fitting into the Gamecocks' 4-2-5 scheme?
"First off, it would be good to play behind one of the best defensive lines in the nation -- Clowney, they have some really good defensive linemen. That would be a big part of the defense they play in."
Rolin, who was recently invited to The Opening combine in Oregon, has felt the love from the Gamecocks' staff, but also likes the fact they haven't pressured him.
"We get along real well. We have a real good relationship," he says of Elliott, his recruiter of record. "I talk to him about everyday. Everyday we keep in touch, but he doesn't blow up my phone like the other coaches do, but he'll shoot me a message on Facebook when he needs to talk to me. We just have a real good relationship."
Rolin is the No. 13 commitment of the Gamecocks' 2013 class.
