In early July, Dillon (S.C.) four-star WR Kwinton Smith started a string of commitments that would see the Gamecocks add three top receivers in less than a week's span. Friday at the Gamecock Showcase Camp, Smith got to work alongside one of those receivers, Sun Valley's Jody Fuller for the first time.
"It was great getting out here with Coach (Steve) Spurrier and seeing some of the guys that are my future teammates, and competing,"
Smith
said. "It was good."
Smith has already camped at
South Carolina
once. And he got the chance to work with his future position coach
Steve Spurrier
, Jr. again Friday.
Known as a raw receiver with a high upside, Smith says he's already seeing the benefits.
"I'm getting better with my routes," Smith said. "I could already tell because when I got back to my high school they were telling me how much sharper my routes were getting. I look forward to keeping on working with him [and] getting me to another level."
The last time Smith camped at South Carolina, he picked up the Gamecock offer he had been waiting on.
"It felt real good," Smith says. "It was a big -- I was waiting on that offer, it was the big home state school that I was the closest with and I know more people around here. It was nice."
And not too long after, he committed.
"To me, they're kind of close to home, and the chemistry I built with all the coaches around here [were deciding factors]. We're going big things."
He's happy to have the process behind him.
"It's calmed down," Smith says. "I can focus on more stuff at the high school and do what I've got to do there."
Two of Smith's current teammates, class of 2013 offensive linemen
D.J. Park
and
Bryce King
earned their South Carolina offers at the Showcase Camp. He'd love to see them in a Gamecock uniform but isn't going to push too hard.
"He's going to do what he feels like," Smith said of Park. "You can only talk to people so much. I'm going to talk to him but if he doesn't go to college here, oh well. I'm still going to go home and be his teammate once again."
And he's already looking forward to being a part of the talented trio of receivers at South Carolina.
"(Fuller) looked real impressive [today]. It's going to be fun, us getting to work together, it's going to be big," Smith said. "We're just trying to get up and meet with (five-star WR commitment)
Shaq Roland
now so we can start bonding."
